Debian 10 Support Ends This Month: Users Urged to Upgrade to Debian 11 or Debian 12 Immediately
The Debian project, developers of the popular Linux operating system, has issued a reminder for users still on Debian 10 to upgrade as soon as possible. Support for this version will end on June 30, 2024, after which no more security updates will be provided.
Typically, the Debian project releases a new version every two years and provides 3 years of regular security updates, followed by two years of extended support. The extended support for Debian 10 is now coming to an end.
Following Debian 10, the project has successively released Debian 11 and Debian 12, both of which are currently receiving security support. Therefore, users have the option to upgrade to either Debian 11 or Debian 12.
For those looking for simplicity, upgrading directly to Debian 12 might be the better choice, especially since Debian 11 will also transition to extended support after its regular security updates end on August 14, 2024, with support ending on August 31, 2026.
Debian 12, on the other hand, is currently in its three-year regular security update phase and offers the longest lifespan, meaning users who upgrade to Debian 12 won't need to consider another version upgrade in the near term.
Additionally, the product lifecycle plan applies to both desktop and server versions, so if your server is running Debian 10, it also needs to be upgraded to avoid potential security vulnerabilities and breaches due to the lack of security updates.
