Fedora Linux 41 Official Release: Featuring Linux Kernel 6.11 and GNOME 47 Desktop Environment
The Fedora Project team has launched the official version of Fedora Linux 41 this week, equipped with Linux Kernel 6.11 and the GNOME 47 desktop environment. This release has moved away from X11 sessions, offering exclusively Wayland experiences.
A significant update for Fedora Workstation is the support for installing NVIDIA display drivers with secure boot enabled through GNOME Software. This marks a major update for Fedora.
The project team stated in the release notes:
The installation of NVIDIA drivers through GNOME Software was removed previously because it did not support secure boot, which is becoming increasingly common in laptops.
Now, enabling NVIDIA display drivers with secure boot through GNOME is great news for Fedora Linux users interested in gaming and CUDA. It also helps Fedora stay relevant with AI/LLM workloads.
Another noteworthy feature of Fedora Linux 41 is that it's the first version to switch to DNF5, aimed at providing a faster and more robust package management experience. Advantages of DNF5 include a feature-rich package manager, no Python requirement, smaller installation size, significantly faster performance in most situations, and a reduced number of software management tools.
Existing Fedora Linux users can upgrade to Fedora Linux 41 directly through DNF system upgrade or using the upgrade feature in GNOME Software. For new installations, please download the image file.
