Microsoft has outlined a phase-out schedule for VBScript, its dynamic scripting language, with a complete removal planned for some time after 2027.
Developed by Microsoft in 1996, VBScript ceased updates in 2008 but has remained available on Windows 10/11. The language has seen a rise in its exploitation by hackers to create viruses over the past five years. Despite ceasing updates, Microsoft continues to provide security support to enhance defenses against such exploits.
With the current low usage rate of VBScript, Microsoft deems continued maintenance unnecessary. Thus, in October 2023, it announced plans for the language's eventual discontinuation.
As of today, Microsoft has declared that post-2027, VBScript will be entirely removed from Windows 11 and subsequent versions, including all associated Dynamic Link Library (.dll) files.
This change is not expected to impact users directly, but developers using VBScript in their software may experience operational issues. Developers are encouraged to promptly update and replace VBScript in their applications.
Phase-out Timeline:
- September 2024: With the release of Windows 11 24H2, VBScript will only be provided as an on-demand feature but installed by default to prevent issues for software relying on it. Users will have the option to uninstall VBScript via Optional Features.
- A point in 2027: Newly released versions of Windows will no longer enable the VBScript engine by default, though it will still be available for on-demand installation.
- After 2027: All VBScript-related files will be permanently deleted, and on-demand installation support will cease, rendering software that calls VBScript inoperative.
There's still some time until the complete removal, with Microsoft providing vague timelines likely to be updated based on actual usage. The goal is to minimize impact on developers and users while ultimately phasing out VBScript.
How to Manually Remove VBScript:
Navigate to Windows 11 Settings > Apps > Optional Features, locate VBSCRIPT, and click uninstall to enhance system security.
If needed in the future, VBSCRIPT can be reinstalled via Optional Features.
