Microsoft Unveils Windows 11 LTSC 2024 Hardware Requirements, IoT Devices Can Opt for TPM Module
Last week, Microsoft announced the release of Windows 11 Enterprise IoT LTSC 2024, the first official version in the Windows 11 LTSC series.
Other LTSC versions, including Windows 11 LTSC 2024 and Windows Server 2025, are expected to be released later this year, likely in September or October. Microsoft has already provided IT administrators with evaluation edition images.
Notably, Microsoft has also released the hardware requirements for Windows 11 LTSC 2024 IoT edition, and the good news is that IoT devices are not required to have a TPM 2.0 trusted platform module.
Here are the hardware requirements for the IoT edition:Recommended Configuration
- Processor: 1GHz, 2 cores
- System Memory: 4GB
- System Storage: 64GB
- Storage Type: Solid-State Drive (SSD)
- System Firmware: UEFI
- Trusted Platform Module: TPM 2.0
- Secure Boot: Enabled by default
- DirectX: DirectX 12
- Display: 9 inches, 720p resolution
Optional Configuration (Minimum Requirements)
- Processor: 1GHz, 2 cores
- System Memory: 2GB
- System Storage: 16GB
- Storage Type: SSD, HDD, SSHD, eMMC, SD, USB
- System Firmware: BIOS
- Trusted Platform Module: Optional
- Secure Boot: Optional
- DirectX: DirectX 10 or no DX support
- Display: Custom size
The hardware configuration of IoT devices is typically lower, so Microsoft's minimum hardware requirements are also lower, which can reduce the cost for OEM manufacturers. However, if OEMs choose to use higher configurations, it can improve the performance of Windows 11 IoT LTSC 2024 and enhance user experience.
Windows 11 IoT LTSC 2024 has a support cycle of 10 years, during which Microsoft will provide various security updates and fix security vulnerabilities, helping to improve the security of IoT devices.
However, other LTSC versions, such as Windows 11 LTSC 2024, may not have a 10-year support cycle, with a possible support cycle of 5 years. The exact support cycle will be announced after the release.
It's highly likely that only the IoT edition does not require a TPM 2.0 trusted platform module, while Windows 11 LTSC 2024 and Windows Server 2025 may have higher hardware requirements, including TPM modules and mandatory UEFI secure boot.
