Microsoft's Latest Preview Update Triggers Endless Reboot for Windows 11 22H2/23H2: Uninstallation Advised
Microsoft recently rolled out this month's C/D class preview updates for Windows 11 users, distinct from the regular B class stable updates released monthly. C/D updates, known for their test nature, usually install only when users actively check for updates or opt to receive updates faster.
However, a significant issue has emerged with the June 2024 preview update KB5039302 for Windows 11 versions 22H2/23H2, leading to systems being unable to boot properly or entering a continuous reboot cycle.
This problem does not affect all users. Microsoft's ongoing investigation suggests that the issue may arise when features like virtual machines or nested virtualization are used, including CloudPC, DevBox, Azure Virtual Virtual Desktop, and more. Thus, the majority affected are developers and professional users, as most ordinary users likely do not use virtual machines and would not encounter this issue even if the update is installed.
Microsoft is still determining the exact cause of the problem and has temporarily halted the rollout of this update. As a result, users checking for updates will not find this patch available anymore. It's recommended for users who have already installed the update to uninstall it promptly to prevent further issues.
This incident highlights the importance of C/D class preview updates, which serve to test updates in advance to avoid severe issues in the subsequent month's B class stable update.
With this problem now identified, Microsoft will undoubtedly work on a fix before incorporating it into the July 2024 routine monthly update. Consequently, such an issue is not expected to recur with next month's update installation.
