iOS 18.2 to Introduce Remaining Charging Time Display, Aiding Users in Charge Planning
Apple's release of iOS 18.2 Beta 2 this week introduced several feature improvements, with the current focus largely on artificial intelligence-related enhancements. However, there are other noteworthy advancements in this version.
For instance, the beta firmware's code includes a new framework named BatteryIntelligence (suggesting a smart twist to frameworks), which is designed to calculate the estimated charging time for iPhones.
Labeling this feature as "intelligent" seems fitting, as the framework must comprehensively analyze the device's remaining battery capacity, charging power, and current battery level to calculate and inform users about the estimated charging duration.
Regrettably, as of now, this function is still in the development phase and has not been activated, meaning that even after updating to iOS 18.2 Beta 2, it cannot be used. It’s possible Apple plans to launch this feature in a future update.
Considering the functionality’s design and the focus on optimizing battery life, BatteryIntelligence might also offer various alerts, such as suggesting users limit the charging to 80% capacity. The estimated charging time displayed would also be calculated based on charging up to 80%, making it easier for users to plan their charging schedule.
For example, before heading out, one could connect their device to a power source and see an estimate of how long it would take to reach a set threshold, allowing users to attend to other tasks instead of waiting for the device to charge.
Additionally, iOS can now indicate when a charger connected is of a slower charging speed. Such notifications could inform users of potential issues with their charger, prompting them to consider switching to a faster charging option.
Oh, and since "Intelligence" might also imply AI capabilities, this feature could eventually be exclusive to iPhone 15+ and newer models.
