Microsoft Confirms Error in Windows 11 24H2 SFC Command, Fixes with KB5044384 Update
Yesterday, Landian.news reported that some users encountered an issue after upgrading to Windows 11 version 24H2. The built-in utility SFC (System File Checker) always detected errors and attempted repairs, but the fixes were never successful regardless of the number of attempts.
In this version, users attempting to use the sfc /scannow
command received the following message:
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. For online repairs, details are in the CBS log file located at windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log, e.g., C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log; for offline repairs, details are in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE parameter."
Originally, the SFC could scan the system core files and compare hash values to detect errors. If errors were found, it would reset them to the system's default version, quickly resolving some issues faced by users.
Following user feedback, Microsoft acknowledged the issue in the Feedback Hub and subsequently released an optional update, KB5044384 (for Windows 11 Build 26100.2152), to address it.
Microsoft states that the update fixes the problem of errors occurring every time the sfc /scannow
command is run, allowing users to once again use the command to check and repair their systems.
However, it's important to note that KB5044384 is an optional update, meaning it will only be installed if the user actively clicks the check for updates button; it will not be installed by default.
After completing testing, Microsoft plans to release the official version update (Class B update) in November to all users. Once the system automatically installs the update, the issue will be thoroughly resolved.
