Hetzner, a European Cloud Computing Provider, Announces Significant Price Hikes and Drastic Traffic Reduction from 20TB to 1TB
Hetzner, a leading cloud computing provider from Europe, like most providers, offers data center options across the globe, including locations in Ashburn, Virginia, and Hillsborough, Florida, in the United States.
Recently, the provider notified its users via email that the prices for its CCX and CPX line servers and load balancers in the United States will all be increased, while the server traffic allocations have been dramatically reduced.
Although Hetzner has not disclosed the reasons behind the price increase and traffic reduction, developers speculate it might be related to the principle of fair use. Originally, it was improbable for most users to exhaust their monthly traffic quotas, but some customers did indeed consume a significant amount of bandwidth by using Hetzner servers to establish CDNs for data distribution.
Server enthusiasts may scoff at Hetzner's actions, but the company is known for its quick adjustments. If a product is not performing well or is not profitable, Hetzner is quick to make changes. This adjustment in prices and traffic allocations is considered slow by their standards.
Below is a comparison table of the CCX and CPX models' prices and specifications before and after the adjustment:
New Prices and Traffic Allocations Effective Date:
For new machines activated from December 1, 2024, the new prices and traffic allocations will apply. For existing machines, the new pricing and traffic restrictions will start on February 1, 2025, at which time users will notice changes in their billing amounts and potentially receive alerts due to reduced data traffic.
Original email notification:
We are writing to inform you about important changes to the tariff structure of our Cloud servers (CCX and CPX lines) and our Load balancers at our US locations in Ashburn and Hillsboro.
What will change?
Starting on 1 December 2024, 01:00 am CET, we will begin charging new prices for newly-created Cloud servers and introduce new amounts for included traffic for Cloud Servers and Load balancers at the US locations in Ashburn (ASH) and Hillsboro (HIL). This also applies to existing Cloud servers and Load balancers that are switched to a different tariff using the “Rescale” function. For any existing Cloud servers and Load balancers you have at these locations, the new prices and the new amounts for included traffic will apply later, starting on 1 February 2025, 01:00 am CET. The price for traffic overage will remain unchanged in the new price structure.
