Apple Updates macOS Screen Recording Authorization from 1 Week to 1 Month, But This Free App Can Permanently Disable Authorization Reminders
In macOS 15, based on security policies, Apple adjusted the permission settings for software with screenshot and screen recording capabilities. For instance, remote meeting software with screen recording/sharing features can be used after users grant screen recording permission, but this permission would be automatically revoked after 1 week, necessitating a reauthorization prompt.
Although intended as a security measure, this policy could be disruptive for many users. Responding to feedback from users and developers, Apple adjusted the policy to extend the automatic permission revocation period from 1 week to 1 month, requiring at least monthly authorization to ensure normal software operation.
Apple has been reluctant to offer options like permanent or annual authorization, but a third-party software called Amnesia can implement a strategy akin to permanent authorization. Amnesia, developed by Jordi Bruin—known for apps like MacWhisper and MacGPT—is a new tool that edits the plist configuration file for each application.
In macOS, software uses plist configuration files to store application preferences. Technically, even with Amnesia, permanent reminder prevention isn't possible, but you can set the reminder date far into the future, such as December 31, 9999.
This way, you won't receive authorization reminders before the set expiration date, which could potentially weaken security. Therefore, unless you're certain the software you're using is completely safe, it's probably better to stick with macOS's default monthly reminder.
Lastly, Amnesia is a pay-what-you-want software. You can use it for free, but if you find it helpful, you have the option to support the developer by buying them a few cups of coffee.
