Apple Reportedly Resumes Development of Augmented Reality Glasses, But Launch Still Years Away
Rumors have circulated since 2019 about Apple working on augmented reality (AR) glasses, initially planned for a 2023 launch, with speculations in 2022 suggesting a 2024 release. However, the tech giant pivoted to release the spatial computing device, Apple Vision Pro, a larger mixed reality (MR) device distinct from the anticipated AR glasses.
In a new development, Apple is said to have paused the development of the second-generation Vision Pro in favor of creating a more affordable version, aiming to draw more users into its spatial computing ecosystem.
Renowned editor Mark Gurman revealed in his Power On newsletter that Apple is redoubling efforts to develop dedicated AR glasses. This product is entirely different from the current Vision Pro, promising a much lighter design, though specific enticing features remain undisclosed.
Sources close to Gurman suggest that the AR glasses are in the early stages of development within Apple. Given the lengthy development process, it might be several years before they hit the market.
Currently, AR glasses typically offer smartphone-related functionalities such as viewing notifications, retrieving content, and app connectivity. This experience differs from Vision Pro, which provides a complete ecosystem independent of smartphones, albeit at the cost of integrating numerous hardware components, resulting in a larger device.
Future AR glasses are expected to retain a "glasses-like" form factor, emphasizing lightweight and simplicity. The extent of their capabilities will likely depend on the evolution of future technologies.
